Bucket List ~ 30 Things to Check Off!

  • Snowshoe through the winter woods and discover the forest beauty that surrounds Jackson.
  • Watch an internationally sanctioned snow sculpture competition and vote for your favorite.
  • Take a romantic sleigh ride with the stars above or the snowflakes falling.
  • If you’ve always been an alpine skier, take advantage of the Alpine Sunday offer to try cross-country with a discounted lesson/rental/trail pass package at Jackson Ski Touring – then wave knowingly to the skiers on the Ellis River Trail as you soak in our hot tub after your day’s adventure.
  • Go to the dogs – experience winter with a dogsled ride.
  • See maple syrup being made at a Jackson sugar house during New Hampshire’s maple sugaring weekend each March.
  • Learn about the White Mountain School of Art and visit some of the artists’ favorite haunts for painting ‘en plein air’.
  • Go on a moose safari – drive ‘moose alley’ in May or June, or take a tour that guarantees a sighting and learn the moose call too!
  • Seek the Peak – Mt. Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast, and you can scale it via the historic Cog Railway or the Auto Road from late May to late October, or for the more adventurous, hike to the top!
  • Once you’ve climbed Mt. Washington, you could join the ambitious visitors whose goal is to conquer all of the remaining 47 4,000 footers in New Hampshire – add to your bucket list only if you love to hike!
  • For another way to reach the top, take a course in rock-climbing or ice-climbing.
  • Back down in the valley, watch 3000 rubber duckies race down Jackson Falls on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend at the Wildquack Festival.
  • Start an herb garden after you take the Inn to Inn Herb Tour the first weekend in June each year.
  • Spot a Bicknell’s Thrush in its unique Mount Washington habitat (limited nature tours in early June each year).
  • Take the Canopy Tour at Bretton Woods for an entirely new perspective on the Presidential Range.
  • Kayak or canoe the Androscoggin or the Saco.
  • Picnic beside a waterfall.
  • Experience the sun rise from the top of Mt. Washington – with luck you might see it rise over the Atlantic – the auto road is open for this special event only two or three times each summer.
  • See magnificent stained glass by Tiffany Studios in the Church of the Transfiguration (Episcopal) in Bretton Woods. The chapel holds services Sundays at 6:30 pm in July and August.
  • Tour the historic Mount Washington Hotel and enjoy the view from their veranda facing the mountain.
  • Drift off to sleep with the sound of the river.
  • Discover one of Jackson’s secret seasons between the end of summer and foliage ~ the sweet first three weeks of September when days are warm, nights are cool, and tourists are few. Stargaze from your balcony or the top of Jackson Falls
  • Take a slopeside horseback ride on Black Mountain for spectacular views of the mountains.
  • Make the acquaintance of Jackson’s most famous October visitors – the Pumpkin People.
  • View the Mount Washington Valley’s spectacular fall foliage.
  • Take a ‘Haunted Hike’ – learn about the last love of Nancy Burton (for whom Nancy Cascades is named) or the curse of Chief Chocorua (Mount Chocorua).
  • Let visions of sugarplums and other sweets dance in your head when you ride in a horsedrawn sleigh on Jackson’s Jingle Bell Chocolate Tour, weekends during the holiday season, or enjoy the annual Inn to Inn Holiday Cookie Tour the second weekend in December.
  • If that’s not enough sweetness, visit the longest candy counter in the world at Chutters in Littleton.
  • Cut down your own holiday tree in the White Mountain National Forest (regulated by the US Forest Service, permit required, must use hand tools, cutting restricted in some areas).
  • Kiss for goodluck on the Jackson’s Honeymoon Bridge (you don’t have to be honeymooners but you may just feel like you are).
